Sources for the 19th and 20th centuries
General
- Telephone directories
- Infobel CD-ROM
- Does have a search map function, based on "MapQuest"; the highest zoom function isn't 100% precise: it will show the start of the street, and not that part where the individual lives
- Belgacom White pages
- (community= municipality)
- Geographical name distribution
- VVF: Geographical name distribution:
- based on the Federal Population Register of 1987 (municipal level, but limited to the municipalities with more then 4 individualks with that surname - no variations) )
- Patronymica Romanica (French - Historical Dictionnairy of personal names)
- Data from the [Belgian] National Register
- All (187,000) surnames, as listed in the Federal Population Register (provincial level)
- Type the (partial) surname in the field "Clef 1" and click on "Recherche"
- You will recieve a page with all surnames, that contains the word that you have entered with the distribution of each name (provincial level) and the INS number of that surname
- Ex: if you look for MATTHIJS, you could enter MAT and receive a page with about thousend variations OR you could enter MATTHIJS, that results in a list of 4 variations. Use the first method to look for all possible variations (in my case MATTEO, ...) and the second to look for the distribution of a surname.

- The census and the population registers
The modern parish registers
- General
- From 1795 on these records don't have a legal value. But it remains valuable to do research in the parish registers for the period 1795-1830, because not all births, marriages, ... where declared to the legal authorities. Only a small group of registers where microfilmed by the LDS. The parish registers will contain less information.
- Some examples of civil registration, with their corresponding parish registration (1795-1815):
